Coming to the Belly Up on March 1, quirky duo John Flansburgh and John Linnell, a.k.a. They Might Be Giants, emerged in the early ’80s with a series of homemade videos that illustrated their topical and humorous lyrics with what was then state-of-the-art videography and animation. Championed on TV shows such as Night Flight, it was their cover of a 1953 novelty song, “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” that provided not only their first widespread hit but also a permanent place in school classrooms, where the whimsical track doubles as an accurate, if open-ended, history lesson (“Istanbul was Constantinople, now it’s Istanbul not Constantinople. Why did Constantinople get the works? That’s nobody’s business but the Turks”).
