The Harbor Seals of Casa Beach: Preserving a Unique Natural Treasure If you have been to La Jolla, you probably took a walk to see the harbor seals at Casa Beach, also known as Children's Pool Beach. It is here that you can see the marine life closer than at any other viewing spot along the California coast. The Seal Society of San Diego has merged with our local Sierra Club chapter as part of the Conservation Committee. Docents Carol Archibald and Ellen Shively will present a comprehensive overview of the habitat, life cycle and survival needs of the harbor seals. They will share some of their stories and observations of public reactions to viewing the seals, and explain why the beach has been contested by both seal and beach use advocates. They will also describe an opportunity to take the training needed to prepare volunteer docents to enlighten the many visitors from around the world about the seals and encourage safe viewing practices. Ellen Shively has been active with the San Diego Sierra Club since her retirement from the Army Nurse Corps and returning to her hometown of San Diego in 1989. She joined the Chapter's Seal Campaign in the mid 1990's, becoming past president of the docent organization and has served on the Chapter’s Conservation Committee for many years. Carol Archibald retired from UCSD Medical Center as a clinical nurse specialist and medical researcher. She has volunteered at the American Lung Association in environmental and health programs for 25 years. Carol served the Seal Society as vice president and has been a docent for over ten years. Public is invited and event is free. Free parking is located below Trader Joes/Ralphs.
