The Kyoto Prize is Japan's highest private award for global achievement, created by Japanese business leader Kazuo Inamori (founder of Kyocera, which has three major divisions in the San Diego/Tijuana area) to honor those who have contributed to humankind's scientific, cultural, and spiritual betterment.
This year's laureates are all octogenarian Americans who have made significant lifetime achievements in computing memory, evolutionary biology, and jazz music.
