“We’re too old to go out on tour, so we decided to be a cover band, only with attitude” says Crunchberry drummer Rex. “We do the kind of covers that either piss people off or leave them scratching their heads. Most of the shit we play is from bands people know, but not the popular songs. The other songs are from obscure punk bands we like…We’re so frickin tired of the same old cover band shit. Any band that does ‘Celebration’ by Kool and the Gang deserves a terrible and painful death.

“We don't get invited back to some places because we don't play the usual pack-the-dance floor stuff,” he says. “We recently played two nights in a row at Di-Mond Jims in Chula Vista, which is usually a karaoke bar, and the whole place was filled with hip-hop kids who just sat and stared at us. Then, during our breaks, they danced their asses off for the DJ. Kinda weird.”

Also weird was the band’s September 2006 gig at Santee’s Driftwood Lounge. “I got caught with no pants on by the trash dumpster," says Rex. "I wasn’t having sex or going to the bathroom, I was just changing out of these ridiculously tight pants and couldn’t do it in the car. The club was cool, though, and there was this drunk chick who was missing a limb and dancing on the stage at one point. The weirdest thing wasn’t the one-legged lady; it was finding out that they have no Mexican fast food drive-throughs in Santee. We had to go without our usual after-show burrito.”
