\r\n\r\nVivienne loved to travel, collect sea shells, knit, crochet, and cook, and will be remembered as a caring nurse, loving chef, and expert craftitioner.
\r\n\r\nVivienne's legacy endures in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

When I met you in November 1976, I was a man who had for years been drinking and basically partying all the time. I know now that if you had not come into my life at that time I would probably not be here now and definitely have never made it 20 years in the Navy. It was only you, without saying a word to me, who made me slowly change.\r\n\r\nTo this day I do not know why you stuck with me for those first few years. Maybe you saw something I did not see in me. You gave me self confidence to buckle down and make a career out of the Navy. When we married and I brought you to Texas; my family fell in love with you just as I had. When you came to California where we started our life together in San Diego you turned our modest little one room apartment into a home.\r\n\r\nFor three years we lived there and all was fine. Then July 1, 1983, I had to leave you while I deployed for seven months on the USS Ranger. I still remember me getting in a taxi and heading for the base. You standing outside by the front of the apartment waving goodbye. That was the hardest thing I had ever done, leaving you alone in a new country and culture you had not gotten used to yet.\r\n\r\nThose seven months away from you seemed like seven years. Your constant letters and packages kept coming and kept up my spirits. As you know, we lost a lot of people on that Westpac due to many accidents and a terrible fire on board which killed 18 of my fellow shipmates. It was my first time away from you and through your letters, my morale was lifted until finally I made it back to you.\r\n\r\nThen after being home only a few months, I left for Denver to go to school for Intelligence Specialist for five months. Once again you persevered alone and even started your own self employed job at California Plaza. There your hard work was noticed by everyone. So much so that all the offices wanted you to do their office cleaning. What a great and wonderful worker you were and still you took care of me and our home.\r\n\r\nWhen I returned from Denver it was only months later when I was transferred to the USS Constellation for almost five years, with two more six month deployments and numerous two month cruises. Still you stood by me through all the time away.\r\n\r\nFinally I got transferred to North Island and I thought we could finally have some time without me leaving. All was fine until Iraq invaded Kuwait. After only being with you for 18 months, I was sent for seven months to Bahrain and prepared for all out war with Iraq. I knew you were scared for me, but I was more worried about you. Your packages to all of us in the war zone, especially the coffee, were helping all of us in Joint Task Force 163. We used your care packages to keep up the war effort.\r\n\r\nAfter the war I went back to North Island but not for long. The Navy decided I needed to go to the USS Long Beach for my last three years. Once again I was gone more than home and still your strength sustained me until I finally retired on July 1, 1994. Thanks to you, I made it.\r\n\r\nFinally we were able to travel together to Texas, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and Florida. You supported me while I went to college and got my degree in criminal justice. After many security jobs, I finally got hired by Correctional Alternatives in 2000. After 9/11 I quit that job and worked as a TSA officer. Once again you supported me in whatever I decided to do.\r\n\r\nAfter going back to C.A.I. to work it happened. You had a stroke on May 3, 2004 which you fought through and recovered from completely within two months. Being ever the fighter, you went back to work and all was well for almost three years. That’s when I noticed you were having trouble walking. At Balboa Hospital you were initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, your ability to work quickly taken away. We had the disease under control for four years.\r\n\r\nIn August 2011 a drastic change occurred and your ability to think clearly and do many tasks were being attacked. It’s as if a terrorist had invaded your brain and was slowly wreaking havoc. It affected every part of your mental and physical abilities. Through many hospital stays and then at home, you kept fighting this horrible disease which after all was said and done, was not Parkinson’s, but Lewy Body Dementia, a most horrible and cruel disease.\r\n\r\nAfter it took your ability to move, think and speak clearly, it made its final attack. Throughout this entire ordeal you fought and never quit. But on Dec. 19, 2016, they put you in Hospice Care at home. The last three weeks of your life I prayed like I had never prayed in my life. I was by your side through it all and learned what true love was. When the Angels came for you on Jan. 8, 2017, I felt their presence. I finally knew your pain and suffering were over. God had called you home to a place where there is no pain, confusion or sorrow.\r\n\r\nThis letter is to let you know I miss you every hour of every day and will love you unto eternity. May God bless and keep you, my loving wife until we are together again when God calls me to reunite with you. Heaven now has another Angel. Thank you for enriching my life for the last 40 years.\r\n\r\nMy love to you until then.\r\nYour loving husband Randy","is_paid":false,"ad_image":null,"uploaded_image1":null,"uploaded_image2":null,"uploaded_image3":null,"condolences_url":"","status":1,"word_count":0,"word_cost":0.0,"photo_cost":0.0,"is_second_run":false,"originating_site":2,"obit_type":1,"funeral_home":null,"user":null,"main_zone":null,"zones":[]},{"id":91,"share_url":"https://www.sandiegoreader.com/obituaries/2017/mar/08/shannon-mansueto/","services":[],"thumbnails":{"original":"https://media.sandiegoreader.com/img/photos/2017/03/08/shannon-mansueto.jpg","medium":"https://media.sandiegoreader.com/img/photos/2017/03/08/shannon-mansueto_t640x480.jpg?d4ed52cd4ddc9cb22c43f5156ea4e8452baa203c","small":"https://media.sandiegoreader.com/img/photos/2017/03/08/shannon-mansueto_t200x150.jpg?b76baba0b3211e962106f9700e4eb507c9a95b23"},"birth_date":"1956-06-06","death_date":"2016-12-31","pub_date":"2017-03-08T00:00:00","first_name":"Shannon","middle_name":"Butts","last_name":"Mansueto","nick_name":"","location":"","is_veteran":false,"city":null,"state":null,"county":null,"slug":"shannon-mansueto","writeup":"Shannon Butts Mansueto passed away peacefully near the end of 2016 at Coronado Hospital with her family by her side, after a prolonged stay.\r\n\r\nShannon was beloved mother of three Coronado children, and wife to Dr. Bob Masueto for over 25 years.\r\n\r\nShannon was born in Coronado hospital June 6, 1956, daughter of Navy Admiral John and Peggy Butts. The family moved to Coronado in 1972 where Caren attended Sacred Heart School. Caren was a competitive CNSA swimmer starting in the 5th grade and she continued in the sport through her graduation from Coronado High School.\r\n\r\nCaren’s airline pilot father and flight attendant mother passed a love of travel on to their daughter. As a family, they explored the world together and Caren’s favorite places included Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Paris, Colorado, and Hawaii. With all of the exotic locations she had been, Caren’s list of favorites was never complete without Coronado and its gorgeous beach.\r\n\r\nAfter high school, Caren spent a year in Australia before returning to San Diego to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations from San Diego State University. While at SDSU, Caren once again traveled, studying for a semester in France. Caren continued her education obtaining Masters degrees in both Business and Education and spent part of her career working for the Coronado Hospital Foundation in public relations. Ultimately, Caren took her loving and encouraging spirit into the classroom to serve traumatized and disadvantaged students through her work as a teacher in San Diego County Court schools where she worked for the remainder of her professional career. Anyone who had a conversation with Caren about her students could hear the compassion and pride in her voice when she spoke of them. Dull, age 58, passed away on January 30, 2017, at her home in Del Cerro after a courageous battle with lung cancer.\r\n\r\nMelissa was born May 12, 1958, in San Diego and remained within a few miles of her childhood home throughout her life. She was the daughter of the late Glen and late Monica (Pann) Dull. She is survived by her partner, Cameron Cole.\r\n\r\nMelissa graduated from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego with the class of 1976. She continued on to San Diego State University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, with minors in Chemistry and Art History, in 1980, and completed her Clinical Laboratory Scientist internship at Grossmont Hospital in 1981. She was a licensed Medical Technologist nationally and in California for 37 years. She went on to work at Rady Children's Hospital, Grossmont Hospital, and a private laboratory before accepting a position, in 1989, with Naval Medical Center San Diego as the mycology and tuberculosis microbiologist, promoting to supervisor within a few years.\r\n\r\n Melissa found her true calling in teaching, specifically mycology. She loved teaching the infectious disease fellows, medical residents, and advanced laboratory technicians. She touched the lives of so many medical professionals and made countless friends along the way. She encouraged the laboratory technicians to complete their education and get their CLS license. She retired, due to her illness, in 2016, but established The Melissa Dull Fund for the San Diego Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Training Consortium (\"Fund\") to encourage future medical laboratory scientists in the profession she loved.\r\n\r\nMelissa was an incredible person who loved to travel, bask in the sun, and read. She would vacation aboard cruises visiting the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Alaska, and other destinations. Several times each year, she would visit Arizona to seek out her happy place at Cathedral Rock and attend the Tucson gem show. She loved mid-century modern design, southwestern colors, jewelry, art, ice skating, pugs, and the San Diego Chargers. \r\n\r\nEvery person she accepted into her circle became a lifelong friend, no matter how many years or miles existed between each visit. Love, Joy, Happiness, Admiration, Pride, Optimism, Adoration, Comfort, Safety and Trust - all words that make you feel like you are wrapped up in a cozy blanket in front of a warm roaring fire. She did this to people. To everyone she met and to those who were lucky enough to be the recipients of her unexpected kindness. And certainly to those in need of a little boost and that hug at just the perfect moment. She did this to people. Her concerns were never for herself and always for those around her including her husband, four children, eleven grandchildren, and closest friends.\r\n\r\nAnd for her not-so-dear friends, neighbors, even the retail employee across the counter whom she had just met. There were donuts and orange juice for the plumber/electrician/gardener having a tough day or the deep concern for the homeless man who had given up hope for any sort of positive attention. And yet more was the sage advice for the young student wanting to illustrate children's books, her special smile for the waiter taking her order for Tomato Soup and enduring love and admiration for her adoring caregivers. The list goes on and on and on. Those who knew her were far richer for it.\r\n\r\nLeslie Ann Wickland was born on June 17th, 1940, the precocious only child of handsome Colonel Daniel Wickland and the beautiful Thais Schofield. These three made quite an unforgettable family. Les' memories of her early childhood, which she writes so eloquently about in her book \"Life LinesThings I Want My Children To Know Before I Go\" are entertaining and fun. Her father was the American stationed in Belgium after the war and her mother fit the part of the Colonel's wife perfectly.\r\n\r\nLeslie was 12 when they returned to Alexandria, Virginia where her father was stationed at the Pentagon. Three years later they moved to Santa Monica where Leslie attended high school graduating with very high marks and a deep love of art, literature and writing.\r\n\r\nNicholas Frazee and Leslie Wickland. their happenstance meeting in college in 1958 would be life-changing for both. They were brought together by a bike's flat tire and a coincidental pick-up, both literally and figuratively, on a deserted Claremont, CA road. He the dashing football player for Claremont Men's College and she the shy journalism and art student at Scripps College.\r\n\r\nShe later became Leslie Wickland Frazee on August 19, 1961. Their love was unsurpassed and beautiful.out of a storybook. Not too long ago someone asked about the depth of their love. How did they get there? How did they stay there? And the answer was simple. This is what we witnessed growing up and have continued to witness for the duration of their marriage: Love, Commitment, Trust, Respect, Laughter and Patience. Not in any particular order but intertwined. That's how they got there. That's how they stayed there.\r\n\r\nFifty- five years full of everything life can throw at you.and then some. So much of it so amazingly good combined with the countless lessons learned by those lucky enough to witness their love. They have done it right, in sickness and in health. Her loves, again in no particular order except for the first. Nick/Dad/Papa. \r\n\r\nAll Things Green, Driftwood, Old Trucks, Her Green Truck, Animals, and Stray Dogs (she had a true knack for finding these). Reading, Running Marathons, Writing and Writing more, and Kids (hers and everyone else's). Hana, Collecting, Sea Glass, Storms (preferably with Rain), Cozy Fires, Wish rocks, Birdhouses, Creating, Fleurs, Tuna Salad Sandwiches, giving back to The Armed Services YMCA, Seasons, Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, Bigfork, Montana and Golden West Lodge, Green Point. Scottie and Ordean, the Less Fortunate. Big Hugs, Succulents, Exclamation Points!!, Fireflies, Country Music, Gardening, Quiet Moments, Friends, and her exquisite handwriting. Yet another list that goes on and on. Her Alzheimer's diagnosis over 15 years ago did not stop her love and zest for life. It wasn't easy for anyone involved. It never is. But we have been able to find unexpected joy in the journey. Joy because this amazing woman who in the later stages with no memories of her own, was able to give us the beautiful gift of our memories of her. She gave so many things to so many people over the years. Not material things, but the things we all need to help us through the little realities of lifeher time and energy, humor and laughter, HUGE heart, compassion, empathy, sense of security, and unwavering and unconditional Love. Yes. Here we are at LOVE again. She was the best at making us all feel loved.what we all want when all is said and done.Leslie passed away on December 2, 2016, surrounded by her closest loves. Her memory, wisdom, amazing heart, and raw courage for this thing called life will be with us forever.A special excerpt from Leslie's beautiful book \"Life LinesThings I Want My Kids to Know Before I Go\":\"There comes a time when, if we are smart, we willingly accept a reality in our lives: the reality of growing older. It's not a threatening truth unless we allow it to be.because it acknowledges where we have been, where we are going and all of the memories of a life well lived in between. Yes, as we grow older there are sorrows which accompany the joys, good times to remember and not so good. But being able to grow old with these memories is a giftand I cherish that gift. As we grow older, dotage, however maligned, broadens our horizons.and puts palms on Alau Island in my Hana, Hawaii. Good-bye to what I now consider my beach until we meet again.\"","is_paid":false,"ad_image":null,"uploaded_image1":null,"uploaded_image2":null,"uploaded_image3":null,"condolences_url":"","status":1,"word_count":0,"word_cost":0.0,"photo_cost":0.0,"is_second_run":false,"originating_site":2,"obit_type":1,"funeral_home":null,"user":null,"main_zone":null,"zones":[]},{"id":76,"share_url":"https://www.sandiegoreader.com/obituaries/2017/feb/16/deborah-kirtland/","services":[],"thumbnails":{"original":"https://media.sandiegoreader.com/img/photos/2017/02/16/deborah-kirtland.jpg","medium":"https://media.sandiegoreader.com/img/photos/2017/02/16/deborah-kirtland_t640x480.jpg?d4ed52cd4ddc9cb22c43f5156ea4e8452baa203c","small":"https://media.sandiegoreader.com/img/photos/2017/02/16/deborah-kirtland_t200x150.jpg?b76baba0b3211e962106f9700e4eb507c9a95b23"},"birth_date":"1951-06-05","death_date":"2017-01-01","pub_date":"2017-02-16T00:00:00","first_name":"Deborah","middle_name":"","last_name":"Kirtland","nick_name":"","location":"","is_veteran":false,"city":null,"state":null,"county":null,"slug":"deborah-kirtland","writeup":"Deborah (Brit) J.
