History Talks: Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project
410 Island Avenue, San Diego, 92101
The Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project, a twenty-year endeavor that has uncovered nearly 60,000 artifacts, more than 30 photographs, and over 130 historical documents, reveals the life of Nathan Harrison, the first African American Homesteader in San Diego County. Harrison, a formerly enslaved man from Kentucky, was moved to California in the mid-1800s through forced migration. Jamie Bastide is a graduate student in the master’s program in the Anthropology Department at San Diego State; she works as a graduate assistant in Collections Management, a University History Curator assistant as well as crew chief, site supervisor, and lab supervisor for the Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project.
