Tuesday Night Races at the Velodrome

“Beer! Beer! Beer!” the velodrome emcee bellows over the PA. A tight cluster of cyclists spin fixed-gear bikes around the Morley Field track. Local band Sando strums reggae next to the loaded grandstands. The emcee booms, “This lap is for a beer, brought to you by Adams Avenue Bicycles,” and maybe fifteen cyclists go anaerobic at the thought of cold Pabst Blue Ribbon at the finish line.

Incidentally, I spent part of a recent afternoon at Adams Ave Bikes remedying a costly but anticlimactic bike crash (several crucial parts failed more or less simultaneously), and was pleased to learn that their knack for oiling up cyclists extends beyond the white walls of the velodrome. I enjoyed beer and a burger while my steed and my spirits were restored to full glory.

Built in 1976 and forming an oval approximately 1,096 feet around, the velodrome is open to the public on any type of bike from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and most Saturdays. Helmets are required. Races take place every Tuesday at 7 p.m. from April through early fall. Admission is free, but BYOB.
