Mikan Zlatkovich is coming to Anthology on Nov. 29, bringing his expanded fusion ensemble JazzMikan+3, which is comprised of electric bassist Dave Curtis, drummer Duncan Moore with flutist Lori Bell, violinist Jamie Shadowlight and vocalist Allison Adams Tucker.
Zlatkovich is one of the few musicians in San Diego with heavy straightahead jazz credentials who can also excel in the fusion context.
"I mean come on, this is 2012," said the pianist a few months back. "It's time to move forward, to try something new. I actually grew up listening to this music in Serbia in the 1980's-- my friends and I were all listening to records by Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin."
Zlatkovich is a master interpreter--he can really capture the spirit of say, McCoy Tyner, in a way that I have not heard others do. "We'll be playing a couple of McCoy tunes, one called Senor Carlos, and Fly With The Wind" says the pianist.
What else can the audience expect to hear?
"It's going to be varied," Zlatkovich promises. "More jazz than pure fusion. We're going to play two songs from John McLaughlin, some Pat Metheny, one from Bill Bruford and even one from Gino Vanelli."
Gino Vanelli?
"Yeah man, it's called Brother, and it's a beautiful arrangement. Trust me, you're gonna like it. Most of these tunes, I've never played before. I listened to them as a kid--but the music was very complicated, and you could not get the charts. ."
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
