Noise musician Sam Lopez (aka Zsa Zsa Gabor) has done a lot to cultivate San Diego's special brand of weird.
Following his time with the renowned (currently on hiatus) experimental/spontaneous music collective Trummerflora, he’s curated the San Diego Experimental Guitar Show, the monthly Stay Strange music and art series at the Kava Lounge, and, this Saturday, his first installment of the annual, all-ages June Gloom.
“June Gloom is a total celebration of dark music,” Lopez writes. “We’ve amassed the heaviest, blackest, noisiest slabs of mutilation meat for your listening displeasure! Too mean for just one event, June Gloom spreads its scabbed and scaly wings for two unholy nights.”
Saturday’s showcase features Bastard Noise, Author & Punisher, Zsa Zsa Gabor, ANA/, and Tabloid.

The following artist descriptions are by Lopez.
Bastard Noise - Originally a co-existing project of powerviolence stalwarts, Man Is The Bastard, Bastard Noise have become one of the more dynamic groups in the noise and experimental music scene. Initially an all electronic outfit courtesy of homemade electronics, Bastard Noise have evolved musically through a myriad cast of contributors and collaborators including Japanese noise legends, Masami Akita and Keiji Haino. Main skull Eric Wood, has recently returned to his hardcore roots, adding his bass guitar and drums to further pummel the senses of his audience. The addition of Aimee Artz on vocals and electronics, expands the original concept of the group and creates an interesting layer to the revised line-up. June Gloom is honored to have these legends perform at this year’s event.
Author & Punisher - Tristan Shone’s style of doom music is one of a kind, literally; he creates the majority of his instruments by hand. These “dub machines” allow Tristan to compose as a solo act while sounding like a full orchestra. Albeit, an orchestra possessed by malevolence. It’s mind bending watching Tristan at work, playing his machines and it’s a full body workout that not only leaves you mesmerized but exhausted. With a background in engineering, you can tell Tristan puts his dark heart and soul into these industrial monstrosities as he gears them towards sonic annihilation.
Zsa Zsa Gabor - Sam has played the guitar with the most unlikely of items; butcher knives, crowbars, and even a human skull . A self proclaimed “noiseician”, Sam Lopez has been unleashing frightening torrents of black feedback under the name, Zsa Zsa Gabor. Sam’s motto is “more is more” and exemplifies this through aural exorcisms of deafening volume. Utlizing a free-tuning technique on his instruments, Lopez lets the notes on his guitar dance like the man at the end of a gallow’s rope.
ANA/ - From the not-so-sunny depths of San Diego’s avant-metal 9-piece, KATA, comes the atmospheric sound experimentation known as ANA/. ANA/ is an experimental project of KATA singer/guitarist Demetrius Antuna, which has also featured accompaniment of other members of KATA such as Rebecca Antuna, Alia Jyawook and Lance LaFave. Where KATA crescendos through hills and valleys of darkness and light, ANA/ floats through space and dwells in the loneliest of caverns. Some have said the sounds of ANA/ are comparable to being crushed by atmosphere.
Tabloid - Luke Molloy & Phil Geraldi from Arcata, CA. They play rotting, meditative music filtered through the lens of late night scrambled-cable TV. Tape, guitar, synthesizers & dripping homemade samples are employed to ambulate the room into an infinitely repeated infomercial for hideous spiritual music or DIY cryogenics. Check this shit out! Your ears will go blind and your eyes will go deaf.
June Gloom’s second installment takes place on Thursday, June 28 at Shakedown Bar with Whitehorse, Sodomia, and Looming.
