I heard A.O. Scott and Richard Roeper say this was one of the strongest years in a long time; in which to pick 10 of the years best. I think, it's one of the years biggest overrated lot of films in a long time. No Country, Into the Wild, There Will be Blood, and a few others, were all okay, but not great, like the critics keep saying.
I liked Michael Clayton a lot. But, it's territory we've been down before. Big bad law firm, representing big bad company that did something bad to the environment, now people will get killed for speaking out. But, they did it all top notch. Clooney was great. Sydney Pollack always is. And Tom Wilkerson is become a favorite actor to watch on screen.
My favorite movie of the year is between Black Snake Moan and The Lookout. Samuel Jackson in the first, who surprised me by not going over the top in it. He hit just the right notes playing a blues singer with the blues.
The Lookout has Jeff Daniels playing a blind guy, who befriends the kid from 3rd Rock From the Sun; who was good in Brick, the high school film noir piece, by the same writer-director. Rent this movie.
I don't like westerns, but really enjoyed 3:10 to Yuma, and hope that Crowe's sidekick gets a nomination for Supporting Actor (everyone just talks about Christian Bale, when this guy was better...he just isn't a name actor).
For bio-pics, Dewey Cox got amazing reviews. And, it wasn't a very good comedy. A few laughs, a few smiles, a few good tunes... but not enough to sustain two hours.
Le Vie En Rose (who knows if I spelled that correctly...I got a C in Spanish, I would've failed French). This biopic was better than Ray, or any biopic in the last 5 years.
The best documentary of the year, was King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (probably should win an award for best title, too). It was about guys vying for the record score at Donkey Kong. Oh, it's so much better than it sounds.
If I had to round out my Top 10...I might put "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead" in there. Hell, Marisa Tomei was naked, you get points for that. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is always great. And for once, Ethan Hawke impressed me (we already knew Albert Finney was aces).
"Once", although it was a tad overrated by some, I really enjoyed. The story and songs were touching. And what a wonderful ending.
Can't think of any more movies. Probably because most of them sucked. And, I ain't getting paid for movie reviews. Not yet, anyway.
