Dan Boles Berry
February 1, 1944 - January 20, 2017
Dan passed in the evening of January 20, 2017. Dan was born to Ethel and Dan Berry Sr. on February 1,1944 in Los Angeles. Before his second birthday, Dan's family relocated to San Diego where Dan spent his early years with his sisters Bobbi and Georgia in South Mission Beach. Dan's family was well known in South Mission Beach for lighted volleyball games, building boats and his Dad pulling up to 7 skiiers at one time. Dan was active in all sports, practicing judo, playing Little League Baseball and surfing. About 10 years later, Dan's family moved to La Jolla where he entered La Jolla High School. His sports interest turned to football. As a quarterback, he went on to lead the Vikings to many victories as well as many personal acknowledgments. In 1961, he was star of the month at La Jolla HS and later went on to be named most valuable player of the San Diego Sectional Playoff. That year he was also named All American All-Star. After graduation, he was offered a full ride scholarship to University of Washington under coach Jim Owens. However he and the rain didn't agree and he elected to leave U of W and take a timeout at San Diego City College. That team had an amazing year and ended up playing in the Junior College National ChampionshipIn 1965, he was recruited by UC Cal as a running quarterback. He was named Golden Bear Pac 8 player of the week for the Cal vs Michigan game. He also took home 2 separate game bowls in the two years Cal played against his alma mater U of W. After graduation, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1966. He played 3 seasons until injuries ended his career. He settled back in San Diego and had a successful career in banking at several prominent banks. While he loved football he also was an avid sailor. He owned several boats and sailing preoccupied most of his recreational time. After retiring from banking, he obtained his Coast Guard captain's license. He is survived by 2 sisters, Bobbi and Georgia, his wife Kathleen (Kathy) and children Adrien and Alexandra as well as 2 stepchildren Lindsey and Micah, grandchildren Aila and Taishi, and many nieces and nephews.He was loved and will be missed.
