Shore Birds migrating southward are beginning to arrive in San Diego County. Through fall and winter various ducks, sandpipers, and plovers will be spotted in increased numbers in the county's coastal wetlands. Best bird-watching spots include the Tijuana River estuary, south San Diego Bay, the San Diego River flood channel, Peñasquitos Lagoon, San Elijo Lagoon, Batiquitos Lagoon, and Buena Vista Lagoon.

Dog owners using Dog Beach should be aware that the mudflats north of Robb Field are part of the city's Southern Wildlife Refuge and not part of Dog Beach. All dogs must to be leashed here according to city ordinance. There is a sign indicating this at the east end of Dog Beach. Let's enjoy usage of Dog Beach as specified but leash-up at the sign and minimize disturbance to this small but vital area for migrant and wintering shorebirds and waterfowl.
