The Rosarito-Ensenada 50-mile fun ride started in 1979 and has been gaining momentum ever since.

This weekend's ride drew over 10,000 (edit: around 6,500 - see comments below) riders and a few bold rollerbladers to conquer the mountainous coastal free-road route.

As a preview for a pending Crasher on the event, here are a few photos from the road.

All of the Mexican newspapers reported there were no more than 6,500 riders, almost all of which were Mexicans. The ride is down about 50% in participation from its peak, which was before the crime waves in Mexico. In 2008, due mainly to violence in Mexico, there were only about 2,000 participants.

Thanks for the correction. My figure was based on the estimates of several long-time participants and bike mechanics.

And right you are - while I did see a handful of gringos and even a familiar face from San Diego, the vast majority of riders were, indeed, from Mexico.
