The premiere event this weekend is the Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday the 7th. The event is billed as the “world’s fastest 5K.” Website.

The course record for men is 12:59:5 set by Sammy Kipketer in the year 2000. The course record for women is 14:46 set by Meseret Defar in 2006.

Both times are the fastest ever recorded on a road course and are recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations as world bests. These times would be the justification for calling the race the world’s fastest.

The event is huge and has several waves of runners with the elite race crowning the day and going off at 12:47 p.m.

Headlining the elite field is 2012 Olympic silver medalist and two-time defending champion of the Carlsbad 5000, Dejen Gebremeskel. Article.
