Child obesity awareness

September is National Child Obesity Awareness Month. Why do titles like this exist? It is as if they're saying, "Hey everyone, we know you're busy, but in case you haven't noticed, there are a bunch of obese kids around".

How about National Kid's in Shape Month? Why not National Healthy Children Month? I don't know, obesity awareness sounds depressing.

Maybe it sounds depressing because it is depressing. Nothing can depress us like the numbers, so let's look at the numbers.

The numbers the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition gives is one in six kids is obese, one in three is overweight.

Now that we're aware, what do we do? As with almost any other issue, we can always visit the website. At the website there is a six-week plan to get you and your kid in shape.

This is where the awareness stops and the futility begins. I can give you a simple fitness plan that will work; for the next six weeks, eat less and exercise more.

Got it? Good, there's the door, go get in shape.

Becoming physically fit is never about the plan. Losing weight is never about a project.

Health and fitness begin and end with mentality. No one can change their body until they change their thoughts about food and exercise.

We cannot help a child get in shape unless we help them replace their thoughts about food and exercise.
