If you’re not familiar with San Diego’s B-boy (breakdancing) scene, you may not know that the reigning world champion B-boy lives here. Last November, Omar Delgado, aka Roxrite, went to Moscow, Russia to compete in Red Bull BC One, the largest global one-on-one breakdancing competition, and brought home the title.
On Saturday, March 31, the first step of the 2012 championship kicks off at Fluxx, where 16 regional B-boys will compete in the west coast qualifying “cypher.” Of the 16, four represent crews out of San Diego County: Sumo Rock, of Rock So Fresh; Lancer, of The Calamities; Freakahzoid, of The Freak Show; and Nick, of Banguhrang.
The winner will head to Chicago in July for the national qualifier, and the world championship will take place in Rio de Janeiro in December.
Roxrite, whose status as world champion gains him an automatic invitation to the international final, will serve as judge for this Saturday's competition.
When: 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012
Where: Fluxx - 500 4th Avenue SD, CA 92101
Beats by: DJ DV One of the Rock Steady Crew
The event is free and open to all ages.
