Home Ec: Sew a Tote
I never took a home ec class in high school. I also never learned how to sew beyond suturing a hole or refastening a button, which is why I'm going to learn how to really sew this summer. San Diego's home ec. studio (2225 30th St) offers adults and kids beginning to advanced sewing classes.
home ec. studio is run by Roselle Ellison and Yvonne Casper who write on their website: "We are vintage with a modern twist and we're here to teach quality and frugality through the art of needlework." Class sizes are limited to 6 for personal instruction, and adult classes range from $45-65. "Basic Sew - Tote Bag" runs this Thursday, June 14 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. In the basic classes, the instructor overviews the anatomy and use of the sewing machine. This three-hour class will culminate in a self-made tote bag.
Other upcoming classes include the summer halter dress, color-block skirts, and the jersey knit summer wrap. home ec. studio also runs numerous children's classes and fashion camps. Registration online or by phone is required to reserve a spot.
