Surf Dog Competition
You've probably seen a dog on a surfboard in a viral Youtube clip, or maybe you've seen a dog surf at the Mission Bay Dog Beach. On Saturday, June 16 at Dunes Park/Beach (700 Seacoast Dr) in Imperial Beach you can watch a number of dogs compete in a surf competition at Loews Coronado Bay Surf Dog Competition.
On the day of the competition, the first heat will begin at 11 a.m. for Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under). In the second heat, Large Surf Dogs compete (41 pounds and over). Tandem surfing takes the third heat, and the Ultimate Champion Round pits first place winners of heats 1, 2, and 3 against each other. An award ceremony follows. According to the website, "Each dog/team has 10 minutes to catch their top two waves, and is scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to 'grip it and rip it.'"
The winner of the Ultimate Champion Round participates in a photo shoot and lunch, poses as the 2012 Loews Hotel poster dog, and will be featured on the 2013 event website and paraphernalia. Other prizes include a pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort.
General admission is free. Competition fees range from $50-55 and include a medal for participation as well as doggy treats. Non-surfing dogs are welcome, but must be leashed.
