Escondido's Inaugural Glow-in-the-Park Art Festival

The Escondido History Center is collaborating with the Arts Partnership and Municipal Gallery to create an Art Park, Saturday August 4th at Grape Day Park. From 7PM through 11, the “Glow-in-the-Park” event, inspired by GLOW Santa Monica, will highlight regional contemporary artists and their one of a kind art installations that incorporate light, inflatable’s, fiber, water, solar, and fluorescence.

Wendy Baker, Executive Director of the History Center said that the event is intended to be participatory for all ages. Thus, the 14 large scale installations will be interactive and constructed with the expectation that they will be handled and even climbed on or through. As with many installation art exhibits, this one, too, aims to utilize found or reusable materials.

“It’s been interesting to see all the projects come in,” remarked Baker. “They are really different.” Because all but a few of the exhibits will be brand new pieces created by artists new to the medium, and because they are required to be interactive, Wilson is seeing a high level of creativity and innovation in the proposed exhibits.

For instance, she said that there will be an exhibit by a group of University of Southern California students who will use illuminated inflatable’s using techniques and principles learned from the Inflatable Architecture course they just completed. Artist Joey Chavez’s exhibit will consist of giant glow in the dark boxes that can be moved and stacked.

Two previously shown exhibits include Rebecca Goodman's Infinite Pulse that allows participants to use a cell phone application to change the color of the lights in the exhibit. Anne Herlihy’s Bella Luna, hailing from Santa Monica’s GLOW show, enables participants to step into a tent, where they are filmed singing karaoke. Their faces are then projected onto a 12’ wide helium balloon tethered 35’ in the air, giving the appearance to viewers outside the tent that this is signing head floating around the park.

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the landmark event. Future events will depend on community receptivity, as well as funding and sponsorship.

Grape Day Park is located on North Broadway in Escondido. Parking is available along Broadway, (three hour limit), but visitors are encouraged to use the 900 space Woodward Street parking lot just north of the Park.
