AUTOMOBILE RACING. Two cars — a Schlacht driven by Al Shain and a Buick driven by famous daredevil Louis Nickrent — will vie for 50 miles over Lakeside's two-mile speedway. Both cars have 40 horsepower.
After swift trial runs, the drivers say the track's so fast it could take less than 50 minutes to cover the distance. That's a break-neck clip for a dirt course.
In local garages, the "betting has been brisk," writes the Union. "Money was posted at even odds, each car appearing to be well supported in the wagers."
E.C. Kuster, representing the American Auto Association, will attend. He'll make sure that "the rules of the governing body in charge of automobile contests would be strictly enforced."
A lot rides on the race, along with possible speed records and tests of fairness. The event, writes the San Diego Sun, "will feel the pulse of San Diegans in regard to automobile speed contests." If successful, they could become a new form of local entertainment.
For this reason, track manager Walter Hempel announced, admission is free. This "should assure the attendance of the entire motor fraternity at Lakeside" (Union).
It did. Five thousand spectators watched Nickrent's Buick 16 "thunder along at a terrible clip." He beat the Schlacht — which had to stop for 17 minutes and 10 seconds to change a tire — and broke the 50-minute barrier. Nickrent ran the 25 laps in 45 minutes, 12 and 3/4 seconds. He also smashed Oldfield's one-mile time with an incredible 71.4 m.p.h.
TRACK AND FIELD. Russ High School (soon to become San Diego High) begins the new season in earnest after the holiday recess. "Athletes in abbreviated attire are again flitting about the local cinder path" (Union).
Coach Sloane devoted this week to basics, "developing the wind of the athletes and teaching them to get out of their marks with the crack of the gun."
Next week the coach will "sort the men into different events for which they seem most fitted."
The big inter-class competition's on January 19. Veterans from last year's squad — Captain Weldon, Smith, Nichols, Gievendorf, Waite, and Jenson — will have to do their best because some of the newcomers look awfully keen.
BASKETBALL. Five teams have formed the San Diego County Basketball League: Russ (San Diego) High, National City High, and Escondido High, along with the La Jolla Athletic Club and the San Diego Playground Department. They'll play a round-robin tournament for two weeks. Highest finishers will then compete for the title.
To prepare for the tourney, Coach Larry Larimore of San Diego is having the Blue and White compete in inter-class games. Seniors and Freshmen play today at 3:30. Sophomores and Juniors will "lock horns" immediately after.
According to the San Diego Sun, "an open air court is now under construction [at SD High], and the players will have a chance to perform in the open air for the first time in several seasons. This will permit larger crowds to attend the games."
San Diego High's motto: "Watch us win."
