Cabrillo National Monument (1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr) was founded in 1542 when explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo anchored his flagship there. The monumental statue of Cabrillo was erected under President Coolidge, and the park has been of interest to numerous presidents including Wilson, Ford, and Eisenhower. The monument, made of sandstone, weighs about 14,000 lbs.
The hiking trail along the coast is moderate, but climbing down into the inlets or caves is more strenuous. The state park also offers tidepools, lighthouse visits, and whale watching.
