Tonight: Free Soundcheck Series Debuts w/Yacht @ Hard Rock Hotel
In 1973, Paul McCartney performed an impromptu concert at the first Hard Rock Café in London, England, establishing the brand’s roots in rock n’ roll and live music. Continuing that nearly 40-year Hard Rock tradition of showcasing music’s future legends with intimate live performances, Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has partnered with Filter Magazine to bring new buzz-worthy bands to town.
The Soundcheck music series will feature monthly live shows, beginning Tuesday, October 18 at the property’s 207 nightclub (seating capacity: 495), featuring a live set from Portland duo Yacht, as well as DJ sets from locals Adam Salter and Gabe Vega.
“The first concert I ever attended was the band Rush in Chicago," says Matt Greene, general manager at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. "Seeing the band live was far more powerful than listening to a record...music is the core of the Hard Rock brand and because we are so deeply rooted in it, we feel it’s our obligation to make that authentic, live experience more accessible to fans."
Tonight's debut Soundcheck show is free to locals, as well as Hotel guests, until the venue reaches capacity. The featured band, electro-pop group Yacht, has toured the world with LCD Soundsystem, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Architecture in Helsinki, and Vampire Weekend.
USA Today dubbed Yacht’s live performance at this year’s SXSW as the conference’s best, and the band’s 2009 album See Mystery Lights was selected as a Critic's Choice by New York Times music critic Nate Chinen.
Entry to the 21-and-up is free to those who RSVP in advance at http://www.filtermagazine.com/soundcheck. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the band goes on at 10 p.m.
A second free Soundcheck show at the Hotel featuring Chicago rapper Kid Sister has been confirmed for December 6.
Recently at the hotel's restaurant Maryjane’s, a popular monthly music series called Underground was launched, highlighting local bands chosen by FM 94/9’s Tim Pyles and featuring its popular $4.20 drink specials.
Additionally, this summer the hotel debuted its concert Tour Bus, a flashy rock 'n’ roll coach offering guests and locals round-trip transportation to various concerts around the city.
