An OB landmark since its construction in 1947, the Sacred Heart Church of Ocean Beach glimmers with a simple yet elegant Spanish mission style.

Bells, or perhaps a recording of bells, can be heard every hour on the hour, from 8am to 4pm. The ringing of the bells is as distinctive an OB morning sound as the squawking of our lovable parrots - and the bells are much easier on the ear.

Sacred Heart was established in OB in 1911. In its first few decades, the congregation convened in the building that lies to the north of the current church.

In this installment of OB in HD, we survey the exterior of Sacred Heart, and - thanks to a friendly member of the church offered to show us around - we take a peek inside, too.

The church strikes us as lovely from all angles. And we're always delighted to hear its bells ring.

Thanks for the shout, Pat! Glad you're liking what you're seeing.

And I didn't realize you also call Ocean Beach home. Wow, our 'hood is definitely well represented here at the sdreader site. Seems like there is lots of nice energy coming out of OB these days, in many forms.

And speaking of energy, the Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-off is tomorrow! Stay tuned for a special OB in HD take on the Street Fair & Cook-Off in the days ahead...
