Man rams two police cars attempting to flee traffic stop

El Cajon Police were led on a wild chase yesterday afternoon when a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Naranca and Oro, refusing to stop after an attempt to pull him over.

Jerry Lee Hickethier, described by police as an unemployed, 6 foot-tall, 150 pound white 33 year-old, ignored the lights and siren of a pursuing police cruiser attempting to stop him after failing to obey a red light, then reportedly stopped, put his Ford Ranger pickup into reverse, and rammed the patrol car backwards, “causing moderate damage to the vehicle and putting the Police Sergeant at risk of great bodily harm” according to a police report.

The suspect, suffering considerable damage to his own truck, continued in his attempt to flee and triggered a full pursuit. Cornered at a busy intersection, Hickethier drove onto the sidewalk, struck a light pole, and crashed into another police vehicle. Still running, and now driving with a flat tire in a “significantly damaged vehicle,” he attempted to enter the I-8 freeway at El Cajon Boulevard. Another police vehicle blocked his path, and after the stop was made Hickethier exited his car and advanced upon officers, who forced him to the ground and made their arrest.

Hickethier is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and evading arrest. All officers involved in the numerous collisions were unharmed, and no members of the public were directly affected.
