How to survive Yosemite in July

The AustinChronicle.com today (March 6) tweaked San Diego's Papa Doug Manchester over the same-sex marriage issue. The new Fairmont Austin hotel is being financed by Manchester Texas Financial Group. The Chronicle reminded its readers that Manchester helped pay for California's same-sex marriage ban, Prop. 8. When the word got out, Manchester's San Diego hotel properties were hit by protesters. The Chronicle points out that the Canada-based luxury hotel operators are gay-friendly; Fairmont properties are routinely listed as among the favorite gay-friendly hotels.

Strange bedfellows, eh? Based on my visits to Austin and dealings with their main newspaper of the time, The Austin American-Statesman, I find it a bit unusual to think that Austin, Texas, of all places, has protesters. Ahh, but there's a big university campus there, and even in the Lone Star State, there are those who espouse the formerly-forbidden topics. Trying to mix Manchester with Canadian liberalism is a recipe for some odd conflicts.
