Man arrested for murder could not make plea today
Arraignment of Kevin Coset was delayed by defense attorneys
A frightened-looking young man was brought into court today, but he did not hear the charges alleged against him, because attorneys are still sorting out who might defend him.
Kevin Albert Coset, 23, looked around the room when he was brought into San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse this afternoon. It is unclear if he had any family or supporters in the room.
Prosecutor Stephen Marquardt said the family of Alvin Bulaoro, who was found dead in his own vehicle last month, was in the courtroom, and the prosecutor wanted to proceed with charging Coset with first degree murder and special allegations of personally using a firearm and a knife.
But Judge Marshall Hockett granted the request of private attorney Pal Lengyel-Leahu and Craig Poynter of the public defender’s office, who both asked that arraignment be delayed until March 11.
The family of Alvin Bulaoro declared him missing after December 21, 2012. Some days later, it was noticed that his vehicle was parked near a local grocery store, in Fallbrook. When local Sheriff’s deputies went to investigate, they discovered the body of Alvin Bulaoro in the back seat area of his Toyota 4Runner. “He was zipped up in a sleeping bag and had signs of trauma to his body,” according to Captain Duncan Fraser, with the Sheriff’s office.
Last Friday, on February 22, it was announced that Kevin Coset was taken into custody on suspicion of murdering Alvin Bulaoro. The suspect is declared to be a corporal in the Marines, and was taken into custody at Camp Pendleton with the assistance of NCIS agents, according to Captain Fraser.
Because he has not been formally charged yet, Kevin Coset, 23, did not enter a plea. He is currently on a no-bail hold.
