A cross border terminal, which would connect Otay Mesa, CA with the Tijuana International Airport, could possibly begin construction by the end of August. The project, which has been in the works for several years, would allow ticketed passengers to cross the border through a terminal for a fee.

The project, named the Tijuana Cross Border Terminal (TCBT), is a joint public-private funded partnership. Customs and Border Patrol officials announced on August 2, that the 12 to 14 month construction project could potentially start this month.

A large number of passengers who fly into Tijuana’s airport have a final destination of Southern California. Numerous U.S. residents also use the Tijuana airport on a daily basis. The project intends to make traveling easier for those using the airport and to also help relieve congested border traffic.

Travelers from California would park on the U.S. side, cross through security, and then follow a 500 foot walkway corridor into the Tijuana airport.

The project is being led by Otay-Tijuana Ventures LLC.
