Man accused of fatal stabbing due in court next week

“She told dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend, later identified as Christopher James Selena, had just stabbed her current boyfriend while inside her home.” Police issued a statement later the same day.

“The woman said she had been in her townhome with her current boyfriend during the night,” according to Escondido police. At some point, the woman became aware that her ex-boyfriend was inside her home “near her boyfriend” who was unconscious and “covered in blood,” police reported. It was 4:28 a.m. when the woman fled to a friend’s home and called for help.

Police immediately responded to the 800 block of North Fig Street in Escondido, to the “detached townhome.”

Officers found the home locked and they “forced entry.” They located a man inside with “a large wound to his torso that is consistent with a stabbing,” according to a statement by Escondido Police Lieutenant Mike Loarie.

Fernando Arellano, 23, was declared dead at 4:30 a.m. on May 5, 2012, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. “The woman’s current boyfriend was the victim of the murder,” Lt. Loarie stated in a press release.

Escondido police quickly released information, asking for the public’s help in locating 41-year-old fugitive Christopher James Selena; he is said to also use the name Selenak. The wanted man was described as 6 feet 2 inches tall and 213 pounds and “should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Later the same day, a Saturday, on Cinco de Mayo, police found Selena at his place of work in Vista and “took him into custody without incident.” The following Wednesday the suspect was brought into San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse and charged with one count of murder, he pleaded not guilty.

In January of this year, Selena was in the same courthouse charged with two misdemeanors -- one charge of inflicting corporal injury upon a woman, and one charge for violating a court order intended to prevent domestic violence. Selena immediately pleaded guilty to the first charge, admitting he “used unlawful force against the mother of my children resulting in injury.” The judge ordered 150 days local custody and $744 in fees and Selena was required to attend a 52-week domestic violence “recovery program.”

A year ago, in September of 2011, Selena was charged with unlawful carrying of a knife. On the plea deal paperwork, he admitted he “unlawfully carried a concealed gravity knife on my person,” as a misdemeanor, and he was sentenced to 90 days custody.

In year 2008, when Selena was 37-years-old, he was charged with three felonies: assault with a baseball bat on a named victim and making criminal threat on the same victim and vandalism over $400. He pleaded guilty to the vandalism charge and was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Starting in 1990, when he was 20, Selena has multiple convictions for drug offenses.

Christopher James Selena, 41, currently pleads not guilty to murder and is held in lieu of $5 million bail. He is next due in court on October 18, for a preliminary hearing in which prosecutor Natalie Villaflor is expected to reveal more details of the alleged crime, in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse.
