Qualcomm CEO and Wife Give $10,000 to Beat GOP's Bilbray

Fresh from a prominent role in independent Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher's failed bid to become mayor of San Diego, Qualcomm chairman and CEO Paul E. Jacobs and wife Stacy have given a total $10,000 to the Democratic congressional campaign of ex-city councilman Scott Peters, who is running against Republican incumbent Brian Bilbray.

Jacobs, son of Qualcomm founder and controversial La Jolla billionaire Irwin Jacobs, was a key Fletcher backer, both financially as well as through a personal endorsement, touted by New York Times columnist David Brooks in a March column highlighting Fletcher's departure from the GOP.

The Jacobs couple each made their Peters contribution on June 20, according to the campaign's most recent disclosure, posted online by the Federal Election Commission.

Through the end of June, the Peters campaign has raised $736,258, $215,141 during the latest reporting period, from May 17 through June 30.

The campaign ended the period with $89,032 in cash on hand, and $1,306,694 in debts and obligations, much of them owed to the candidate himself.

In addition to Jacobs and his wife, other Peters donors included Democratic ex-congresswoman Lynn Schenk, who was ousted by Bilbray in 1994. She gave $1,000.

Jeff Silberman, son of once-imprisoned Democratic financier Dick Silberman, gave $2500 on June 17, bringing his total contribution to $5,000.

Silberman's wife Karen, sister-in-law of ex-San Diego school superintendent Alan Bersin, currently an official in the Obama administration, gave $2500.

Bilbray's June fundraising report hasn't yet been posted by the FEC.
