College Republicans Rate Professors as "Teachers or Preachers"

SDSU College Republicans, a student organization at San Diego State University, has issued a list of “Teachers and Preachers,” in which the conservative group casts judgment on the teaching style of 72 campus professors, declaring them to “either ‘teach’ the subject that they have been hired to teach or ‘preach’ their political biases in the classroom.”

“The college classroom has become a hostile environment for students trying to get a well balanced education,” said Lx Fangonilo, the group’s president, in a release accompanying the list. “Professors have been known to completely disregard the subject that they are hired to teach and instead they use their time behind the podium to spread their personal agendas with the expectation that students will accept opinions as fact,” he goes on to assert.

The statement released by the College Republicans also states that “as students begin to register for the 2012 Spring Semester . . . it is important for them to consider whether or not the professor that they are choosing will actually be teaching the proper subject matter.”

39 names on the list, or 54 percent, are listed as “preachers.” Included on the list is Lori Saldana, women’s studies professor, former state Assemblywoman, and candidate for Congress in the redrawn 52nd district.

The group says the list was compiled by their members, SDSU alumni, and “a diverse sample of SDSU students.”
