The Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, recently bought at what was considered a low price, has told the California Employment Development Department that it could lay off as many as 295 employees. The highly-rated facility is at 9700 N. Torrey Pines Road. The WARN notice was filed Dec. 21. On Dec. 1, Irvine's Pacific Hospitality Group announced that it acquired the 210 room upscale facility from Los Angeles-based Lowe Enterprises. The property on 10 acres, opened in 2004, was placed on the market in June, according to San Diego Business Journal. At the time of the purchase, Atlas Hospitality Group estimated to the journal that the price was probably $63 million.

Why the layoffs? Are they closing the hotel? I have stayed at the Estancia, and I doubt if more than 295 people work there.

You have to wonder. One possible explanation is that the WARN list is of potential layoffs, not necessarily certain ones. Still, one has to question if the facility will be changed to something other than a hotel. Best, Don Bauder

Wow, I didn't even notice they finished this place!

Back in 1988 the Ritz Carlton had started building a 300 rooom Ritz and then the recession hit and they stopped. Sat empty for 15 years at least.

The new owners say they will focus on leisure and group conferences, aiming for nearby health and tech-related markets. It has a big conference facility. Best, Don Bauder

Maybe ditching their undocumented workers while they can.

That raises an interesting question: does a company intending to lay off undocumented workers have to report the possibility to the Employment Development Department's WARN system? Hmm. Best, Don Bauder
