Anthology Jazz Institute Opens Doors in July

Successful real estate developer and life-long jazz fan Howard Berkson, who also owns the Anthology nightclub, is giving back to the music youth community in San Diego with the Anthology Jazz Institute, aimed at educating student musicians from ages 12 to 14, this summer with classes held at the Francis Parker School in Linda Vista.

Students about to enter the 6th through 8th grades will learn about jazz through courses in performance, improvisation, theory, and history from a faculty of top-flight working jazz musicians. There are going to be two one-week workshops: session 1 from July 25-29, will handle beginning to intermediate students, and session 2, from August 1-5, for intermediate through advanced players.

San Diego's only true full-spectrum jazz radio station, KSDS Jazz 88.3 is also providing support.

Vocals will be taught by Kevyn Lettau, who has long associations with Peter Sprague and Sergio Mendez, as well as many fine recordings as a leader. Trumpet mentoring by Derek Cannon, who's got Hubert Laws and John Faddis in his résumé. Trombonists will be led by Andy Geib, longtime San Diego veteran who appeared with the Jason Robinson Janus Ensemble last month and on over 70 recordings as a sideman. There are two bass instructors: Justin Grinnell a charter member of the ARC trio, Jim Whitt is the music chair of Francis Parker and also plays with the Santa Barbara Symphony.

Mike Holguin, who has played with Grammy Award–winning Celia Cruz and who also teaches at SDSU, will handle the percussion studies.

Melonie Grinnell will teach vocals and piano, Steve Steinberg will instruct the reeds, and Dr. Ella Steinberg will also guide young brass players.

Auditions will be held on the Sunday before each session to determine placement within the program. For more information, go to francisparker.org
