Gloria's Hit Piece: "No Backroom Deals", Backfires

So by now, everyone has seen the not so subtle hit piece from Camp Gloria that shows a devil shaking hands with some seedy, ubiquitous politician. The front says "The Voter Education Project" (btw, thank God there is a group out there trying to educate me). Open it up...

"But That Hasn't Stopped Stephen Whitburn From Taking 1000s from Special Interests"

What!!! Why have I been helping Stephen if this is true?

Flip it over and there it is.... a list a very seedy, sketchy, official looking list of special interests..

"No More Backroom Deals"

http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/articles/2008/10/30/election/751love102908.txt

But wait... I see Dan Soderberg. He is a good friend and he has always come to meetings to fight developers. I'm pretty sure he told me he was a Film school grad and an architectural photographer. He and I put the debate questions together for the Uni/Heights political debate and it was geared at finding out who will fight developers. Has Dan been lying to me this whole time?

And then I see Tom Mullaney, another person that I thought was an ally. I attended some of his meetings because he led the fight against the 301 University project. He has dedicated tireless hours of his time and his own money to fighting developers. Have I been tricked?

Im pretty sure I would have been on the list since I work for an architect had I been able to give Stephen more than $100. Am I really actually FOR developers? ...despite the fact that I have spent hours and money building a website called developeralert.org. Now I see why I called my blog "I've Got Issues".

Hmmm, maybe I have been tricking myself, because Todd would not lie or mislead anyone. He is Toni's top pick after all.

He must have had a group of hard working volunteers make and mail these mailers right?

Thankfully, Maggie McCann, a voice of reason, came to the rescue. She explained that this mailer that Todd was sending out to everyone in D3 explaining that Stephen was making backroom deals with developers, was paid for by a backroom deal with a developer for Todd Gloria. I like this explanation alot more because it means I don't need medication and Im not AS crazy as I first thought.

Here is the breakdown

The organization that was created to put out the campaign mailer, San Diego Voter Education Project.

Who are they:

The mailer funded by: Thomas Sudberry, the President of Sudberry Properties, the developer of the recently approved Quarry Falls development, provided $1,000 for the mailer, ostensibly to support the position on two propositions. Thomas Sudberry, a registered City lobbyist, had previously donated $540 to the Todd Gloria Campaign. His wife, Jane Sudberry has also contributed the maximum amount of $540 to Gloria. Other registered City lobbyists who are employees of Sudberry Properties and who have contributed to Gloria’s campaign include Stephen Haase, $540, Jeffrey Bradley, $270, Marco Sessa, $540, and Colton Sudberry, $270. With the possible exception of Lehman, none of these people live in District 3.

The group lists as its Treasurer registered City lobbyist Paola Avila. Paola Avila is also a registered lobbyist–; Otay Mesa Ventures, LLC, rezone from industrial to residential; OLP Community Outreach Mr. Avila personally contributed $540 to Todd Gloria’s campaign. One of Mr. Avila’s clients is Our Lady Of Peace parochial school; he serves as their Community Outreach specialist.

So the whole thing was bought and paid for by an "independent expenditure", which I just learned means ANYONE can make up ANY name and do something on your behalf to get you elected. And here is the best part, Todd can receive 1000's (like in the case of this mailer) from developers and not have to report it in his famous "17%" from developers.

The best part is this "list" is made up of some of the most solid, and upright citizens you have ever met. And they are people that go to city council meetings and speak all the time. So Todd, if you win, this means that you are going to have to look these people that you just slandered in the eyes for the next 4 years.

I think the front cover of the sketchy politician shaking hands with the devil may have been you, because as far as I can see, you have just created your very own hell.

UPDATE:

Apparently the controversial mailer has caused quite a stir. I have never seen such a visceral reaction from people. I personally, feel very strongly about it, because many of the people he named are saints in the world of preservation and deserve praise not unsubstantiated accusations. This is serious. It makes me feel sick to think someone representing us could behave this way and could slander the very best of his District. And I mean slander.

http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/news/breaking/2008/10/gloria_responds_to_controversi.html

And then to add insult to injury, he gets the UT to do some dim-witted damage control and all the story says is this: "I cannot speak to the factual accuracy of the mailer in question. I do believe that negative campaigning distracts from the issues of importance to District 3 voters," he said.

He doesn't even denounce it and barely acknowledges it. Does he review these mailers or not? One of my favorite comments was from Maggie McCann...

"Todd could speak to the facts, but then he'd have to admit to being involved. It's ironic that the people chosen for inclusion are leaders of grassroots neighborhood movements against bad urban infill development - 301 University, OLP, Kensington Terrace, etc. And Todd's donor forms show he's taken money from the developers and lobbyists from all those developments. I take back everything I've ever said about him being Atkins in a better suit - he's really Son of Madaffer."
