Oceanside Police spotted Siaki Ramon Del Rio, 29, a known gang member wanted on a felony parole violation, in a vehicle. A car chase ensued on Big Bend Way in Oceanside. The chase came to an end after four minutes. Del Rio crashed his vehicle in a mobile home park.
A struggle between suspect and officers ensured. Del Rio boldly informed officers he had a gun and threatened to use it on officers as they struggled to gain control of him, according to Oceanside Police reports. Officers stated that Del Rio “violently resisted attempts to take him into custody” and “refused to comply” with their orders.
As a result, the officers fired their service weapons at Del Rio, according to Oceanside police spokesman Sgt. Leonard Mata. Del Rio was pronounced dead on the scene.
A loaded handgun was found in clothing he was wearing at the time of his death, the report said.
The officers involved in the shooting are Jon Seabron, a 12-year veteran; Erik Ellgard, a 7-year veteran and Ryan Erwin, a 5-year veteran. Seabron and Erwin are patrol officers assigned to the canine unit; Ellgard is with gang enforcement.
Two of the officers have returned to full-time duty.
