Coronado attorney Craig Shaber on Thursday (Oct. 21) pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 2000. According to the indictment and related documents, between 1999 and 2002, Shaber and accountant Steven Wright fraudulently acquired numerous shell companies, installed nominee officers, and filed false documents to such groups as the Securities and Exchange Commission. Then Shaber and Wright, who last year pleaded guilty to tax evasion, evaded taxes on the millions of dollars earned from the sale of the shell companies (which are empty companies used for financial manipulations, such as going public without having to reveal information required in an initial public offering.) The cases are being probed by Internal Revenue Service criminal investigators.

Did any of the alleged shell companies actually conduct business with members of the public, or did they exist only as fictitious accounting transactions?

If they did business in public, did any of it involve alleged work performed or other contractual obligations with any local government unit?

Response to post #3: Shell companies are not illegal per se. Nor is going public by back-dooring into a shell rather than issuing an IPO. However, the SEC did file a complaint in 2003 about Shaber's and Wright's conduct in selling the shell companies.Their big problem was not paying taxes on the money they made selling the shells, according to the government. People get what they deserve. Losing his law license and being ruined is karma and not just for the tax evasion.

It is clear the posters hiding behind "shell" ID's know nothing of Mr. Shaber, his work or the government's case. Nor do the poster have any knowledge of the criminal "Just Us" system in this country, yet you collectively are willing to judge, sling arrows and spread falsehoods. Shame on you all!

I know Craig personally and he is a great guy, very intelligent and someone you can trust. Mr. Shaber was making shells and selling them, nothing illegal there. He declared ALL income and had the same accountant/book keepers (Steven R. Wright or Wright and Geis) for 15 years. Wright had letterhead and web site that said he was a CPA, that was a lie, unknown to Mr. Shaber or Wright's clients. Wright became the government witness and his statements to the government are that Mr. Shaber, started to do his own taxes using Wright's tax software beginning in 2000. That is why Wright's corporate address and tax preparer ID is printed on the tax returns. Wright also testified that he accidently signed these return for the next SEVEN years!!!!! Even though to "accidently sign" you have to flip to the second page. The government offered Craig 18 month plea deal or they would charge his ex-wife and recharge the taxes so if he was convicted he would spend the rest of his life in prison. It truly does not take an expert in game theory to understand Mr. Shaber had no choice! That is a fact in the US criminal "Just Us" system. If you want to avail yourself of the constitutional protections the government will destroy you! If Craig's cowardly former accountant is lying about doing his taxes, what does this tell you about who is really guilty??!!

Your homework is to read some of the many law review articles about abuses in the plea "bargain" process. If you believe the government, then you did not follow the lies told regarding the reasons for the Iraq war, the holding of two US citizens in prison for 5 years without any constitutional rights, Gore V Bush, the Church reports,............ the list truly is endless. America is a very hypocritical nation, with the highest number of of prisoners in the world, one percent of our population is in prison, some are very bad people and some have been wrongfully charge and persecuted by a system that is specifically designed to leave a defendant with no rights, or options, other than what a prosecutor, who only measure of success is how many people he throws into prison, offers.

If he used an accountant for 15 years and did not know the accountant was misrepresenting himself as a CPA than Mr Shaber is an idiot. Mr. Shaber signed the tax forms prepared himself but done on Mr. Wright's software for 7 years and claims ignorance? What did he think he was signing? Ever heard of using Turbo Tax? The rant shows an unbalanced mind. And no one believes "Anton Ivan" wrote it. "Anton Ivan" will be sentenced 3/28/2011. Mr. Shaber has a long record of misconduct. Just check the public record. Hopefully the federal prison system offers mental health counseling.

Craig Shaber-if this was the lie you say it was, then you should have gone to trial. Going to trial is showing the gov you have a backbone and won't get railroaded because you beleieve you are right.

If you signed a plea deal then you lose the right to say you're innocent.

Shaber claims he did his taxes for 7 years on Wright's software so it looked like Wright did the taxes. Wright signed as preparer and Shaber signed with Wright's "accidental signature" as preparer for 7 years!
And he expects anyone to believe this? His attorney was smart to have him take a plea agreement. Imagine if his had ranted in court the way he has ranted here? Stupid or greedy and self entitled? Shaber was still doing deals with Wright up until the day he was arrested. If he had not been caught he would be doing deals now. He continued to do deals even after the 2003 SEC charges. Which ex wife? The one he installed as head of his shell companies or the one with falsified papers? Did he care about her or that he would go to prison for 20 years if convicted on all counts?

Does anyone know why his sentencing keeps getting delayed?

anefsky May 21, 2011 @ 6:40 p.m.

Finally he will be sentenced. Any news on the falsified documents? He screwed so many people.

anefsky May 27, 2011 @ 10:05 p.m.

Sentenced to 10 months and $555.000 to IRS. Not much considering he did not pay taxes on over 3 million dollars.
I wonder if there is more criminal action to come. More civil action to come?
