U-T Staffers Meet Their Team Leaders
Editorial staff members of the Union-Tribune today (June 9) were introduced to so-called "team leaders," supposedly a new concept. For example, one person will be in charge of features, arts and the Night & Day section. Newsroom employees were asked to list their job interest -- rather like applying for a job. It is assumed that not all will get the jobs they request, which means there will be layoff -- a foregone conclusion. There are new job categories such as "quality checker." That would appear to be what a copy editor does. According to rumor, the company wants a dozen quality checkers, but more than 20 qualify -- hence, some heads will be chopped. I heard reports of some current editors who have taken lower-ranking jobs, but I didn't have time to check the accuracy of the rumors. I also heard there were some layoffs today, but couldn't verify that.
