Editorial staff members of the Union-Tribune today (June 9) were introduced to so-called "team leaders," supposedly a new concept. For example, one person will be in charge of features, arts and the Night & Day section. Newsroom employees were asked to list their job interest -- rather like applying for a job. It is assumed that not all will get the jobs they request, which means there will be layoff -- a foregone conclusion. There are new job categories such as "quality checker." That would appear to be what a copy editor does. According to rumor, the company wants a dozen quality checkers, but more than 20 qualify -- hence, some heads will be chopped. I heard reports of some current editors who have taken lower-ranking jobs, but I didn't have time to check the accuracy of the rumors. I also heard there were some layoffs today, but couldn't verify that.

Wow, I just had an amazign idea. We should have "team leaders" for all the people who post here at the Reader website.

Don, you could lead the Journalist crew at the Reader.

JW/JW could lead the public employee whiners.

Refried could lead the crew who operate out of Mexico.

Nan could lead the crew of smarty pants posters.

This is an entirely cool concept!

This takes me back to the merger of the two papers in '92, on that excruciating day when people were called in one by one to learn whether or not they still had a job... Since there were two Food Editors, two Travel Editors, etc., it wasn't much fun to see one person come back smiling and know the other would be either reassigned or let go.
