I blame Carla: she got me going on the whole history thing. And guess what? It’s all around us. Like t’other day I was in Old Town, sauntering down Twiggs Street, ’cause I saw that sign, “Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina” stretched right across the end of the street (at 3890 Twiggs). So I get up there and see that everything can be a bit pricey, like $40 for a bucket of lobster tails and shrimp combined with carne asada and chicken. But then I see they have a happy hour. This, I say to myself, is worth exploring. Not just for deals, but the place has an atmosphere about it. Because the other thing I spotted was a historic landmark sign saying “Casa de Lopez.” And up the driveway, past the fountain, on the stucco wall, another sign says “Built by Juan Francisco López, one of San Diego’s early Spanish settlers, about 1835.” This same house? Those Silver Dons came galloping right up to this door, like 176 years ago? Wow. Carla’s gonna love this. Here’s hoping for a happy Hora Feliz. I’ll give you the full rundown in next week’s column.
