Border News Translations: Holiday Weekend; Amber Alerts

TIJUANA BC (Enlinea Tijuana, 5/29/11) - Hotel occupancy of around 90 % is expected in major tourist sites in Baja California on Memorial Day weekend, comparative with last year, reported the State's tourism Secretary, Juan Rosas Funcke. He explained that this rebound was most evident in beach destinations, as the port of Ensenada reached 95% occupancy this Saturday, while the previous year they recorded 89% for the same day. On the average for Fridays and Saturdays in the port, they managed an occupancy increase of 67% in 2010 to 74% for this year, based on a sample of 12 hotels and 1,500 rooms. In the port of San Felipe, the occupancy for Saturday reached 87% while last year it was 83% for the same day. The increase was most notable for Friday in which there had been 50% occupancy, 13% more than last year. This contributed to the average for both days rising from 60% in 2010 to 69% in 2011. Hotels in the San Felipe sample consist of 13 facilities with 651 rooms. In Playas de Rosarito, occupancy was 73% on Saturday, which translates into an increase of 15% in relation to the previous year with 58%. The average for Friday and Saturday was 50%, eight points more than last year, using the sample of 15 hotels and 1,390 rooms. The owner of the Secture mentioned that despite sudden changes in weather conditions the increase in hotel occupancy was achieved at the same time the Governor of the State, José Guadalupe Osuna Millán, promoted greater efforts in both national and overseas markets. "Any reason we can say that there is recovery is good. Yes, we can see good signs registering improvements in the indicators", clarified the State official. He said that it should be recognized the work done by the State tourism sector as a whole; the hotels, restaurateurs and traders have launched several efforts to become more competitive with special rates and packages, as well as strategies to link events, from artistic, cultural and those relating to the wine route and hosting at different destinations. In the same way, he recognized the coordination between the committees of tourism and conventions, Proturismo, as well as public trusts for tourist promotion of the different cities. The Secretary of Tourism of the State similarly expected significant tourist flow in which a field exceeding 250 teams from the United States and other countries are expected next week, particularly in the port of Ensenada, with the world famous off-road Baja 500 race.

TIJUANA BC (Enlinea Tijuana, 5/29/11) - Authorities of the State Attorney General of Justice in Chula Vista, California and the Red Binacional de Corazones, endorsed the commitment to strengthen the Amber Alert program to mobilize society and Government in search for abducted children. After attending and participating in a meeting this weekend, the Tijuana area solicitor, Martha Imelda Almanza Topete said agreements were reached to strengthen the Amber Alert program. The authorities included the Mayor of Chula Vista, Rudy Ramirez, and the Red Binacional de Corazones Director, Alma Tucker. The Government official stressed that this program was adopted internationally, and Baja California is a pioneer in Mexico trying to stop children being stolen or taken to other places. Martha Almanza explained that coordination occurs not only with American authorities, but also with associations on both sides of the border, the timeliness in response is of vital importance to resolve cases. Training on the part of the United States Department of Justice was provided under implementation of the Amber Alert program in Baja California in 2009 when it began in Mexico. Since then, explained the solicitor 5 alerts have been activated. Three were successful, managed not only to recover the child, but those responsible for taking the children are facing criminal trials. Rudy Ramirez explained these meetings serve to update information and the importance of society and the media participation in the Amber in Mexico project in the area bordering the United States. He recalled that the Amber Alert started in 1997 in Texas and California in 2002. He said, it is a program that continues to improve and evolve. This is another stage, including the Mexican system. In 2010, California had 18 Amber Alerts and of those, 16 were successful. Meanwhile Alma Tucker, Director of Red Binacional de Corazones said, "Integrating civil associations is what we have to do for prevention and awareness-raising with victims of human trafficking. Among these is the abduction and disappearance of minors. We are concerned about missing children. That is why we collaborate with the Amber Alert program.” The meeting noted that it expected that by January 2012, according to information from the Ministry of the Interior in Mexico, this important tool would already be applied throughout the country for the sake of the children. This program in Baja California has been strengthened thanks to the collaboration of civil associations and the media that have joined this effort to help in the recovery of children.
