El Capitan trys to clean up the “RUST”

(El Capitan 49 - University City 0)

The Vaquero’s started the year in East County as the team be beat in the Grossmont North. All though that still remains to be seen since league play won’t start for a few weeks, but El Capitan has been suspect on defense and sputtered on offense making the overall look of the team a little rusty from last year.

Whenever you have a quarterback accomplish what Tanner Rust did last year for your program you must understand that expectations could have reached the threshold barrier for this young man to handle. As a junior he threw 30 TD’s and over 3,000 yards. Well that is some pretty big expectations to have to follow through on as a teenager starting your senior season. No pressure at all for a 17 year old huh? Well Mr. Rust has looked rusty has he completed less than 50% of his passes so far this year. A lot of that has been his lack of protection and as a team the Vaquero’s have been dealing with injuries all year.

Against University City on Saturday the Vaqueros shut out the host 49-0 as they cleaned up the rust on the preseason. Tanner Rust threw for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns despite being under some consistent pressure all game. The defense carried El Capitan this game just like it has all year recording its second shut out of the year. The Vaqueros improve to .500 on the season and are 2-2 so far this year. It won’t get an easier next this week as Steele Canyon will be preparing for drive over to Lakeside this Friday for a showdown in East County.
