Braves knock off the D-V Champs

The 2008 El Cajon Valley Braves football team is off to its 2nd best start in school history. El Cajon has been playing football since 1955 and only one other team has ever started (4-0) and that was in 1997. Coach Dan Goodrich and staff beat the defending C.I.F. Division V Champs Bishop’s last night in La Jolla 35 – 14, in a game where the Braves won but still let them off the hook easy.

In the first quarter alone this year El Cajon is averaging 20.6 points so a fast start was expected. What the Braves found in the first quarter of this game was three bad snaps and three penalties and (0 – 0) tie after one quarter. After being shut out in the first quarter by Bishop for the first time all year the Braves looked to senior signal caller Issac Soliz to answer the bell in the second. Soliz started to find the holes in the Bishop’s Swiss cheese defense and cashed in on 2 touchdown passes before the half to give the Braves the (14 – 0) halftime lead.

El Cajon’s two way starter Gavino Pinal was a staple in the defense all night from his free safety position and helped create a few turnovers.

"It's all about the 'W,'" said Pinal. "Everyone put in a great effort."

That is including Pinal who had an INT return for 29 yards and then play of the game which put the game out of reach on a 77 yard reverse he ran for a touchdown. Don’t be surprised if it is not a candidate for the play of the week on the Prep Pigskin Report.

The Braves defense set the tone early in the second half on a defensive score. Kendall Conley picked up a fumble from a bad quarterback & running back exchange and took it all the way back for the score making it (21 - 0) early in the third quarter. At one point the game was (35 – 0) before Bishop’s quarterback tossed a couple of desperate touchdowns on attempt to get the Knights back in the game. The Tribe would have nothing of it has they held strong and intercepted the Knights late in the 4th quarter to seal the deal.

Braves improve to (4 – 0) and remain undefeated on the year. Look for the Braves to be climbing up the rankings here over the next few weeks. So far it has been a quiet (4 – 0) start for El Cajon Valley, but you better believe that some of the other Grossmont foe’s have the Braves on their radar.

Prediction (El Cajon 28 – Bishop’s 21)

Final Score (El Cajon 35 – Bishop’s 14)
