Upset Special of the Week
Confidence and expectations are high around the Monarch campus this football season. Four years ago this program had the same swagger and delivered a Grossmont League Championship. Monte Vista got outlasted in week one by Point Loma in a 29-26 thriller on the coast. Point Loma was D-III finalists from year ago and handed the Monarchs 0-1 record after the loss in the season opener.
After a week off from an early bye, Monte Vista draws Santa Fe Christian on Friday night which should be a solid match up in Spring Valley. The Monarchs will be tested early by the Eagles and probably often. Last week they had 41 points on the board by half time in a blow out win versus Palo Verde 55-26. Coach Brian Sipe of the Eagles consistently schedules games with schools that always have above average talent, so expect his team to be well prepared and disciplined. This year they have St. Augustine, La Jolla, and Brawley in the desert on their schedule.
The Monarchs have returning quarterback Maurice Payne coming of his sophomore campaign of generating 16 touchdowns. You can expect those numbers to be on the rise this year. Payne’s strength is in his ability to run the ball, but the rumor in fall camp was Payne looked very good getting the ball down field to some very talented receivers. Payne, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior, generated 202 yards in Monte Vista's 29-26 season-opening loss to Point Loma. He was 14-of-25 passing for 149 yards and one touchdown. He rushed for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 13 carries.
Most would probably predict a Santa Fe Christian blow out here, but league play is where the Monarchs seem to struggle because they are only 2-12 over the past three seasons. Coach Page Culver is going into his sixth year has the Monarchs coach and has his squad poised and ready for to pull off the upset special of the week.
–Prediction (Monte Vista 32 – Santa Fe Christian 28)
