The East County Football Blog - Game of the Week, presented by the San Diego Reader showcases the Foothillers of the North League traveling to the Cougars of Steele Canyon who represent the South League. It’s very hard to say what team has the edge here as it is very early in the season with both clubs at 1-1. The Cougars were smashed by section power house Cathedral Catholic 48-7 in week one, but then answered back against West Hills last week with a shut out victory 27-0 and are looking to improve to 2-1 on the year.
First year Grossmont Coach Ron Murphy is only 3 points away from being undefeated as they lost to Otay Ranch 21-19 in week one, but then took care of business against Montgomery last week 34-6. Quarterback Tyler Mutter of the Foothillers has completed 52% of his passes and thrown for 3 touchdowns in the first two weeks and looks very solid as the field general this year and he is only a junior.
The Cougars were picked to finish 2nd to Helix in the South division by Bill Dickens of the UT, but you better believe Coach Boehmke in his 7th year will rally his team to be very competitive come league play. Steele Canyon’s offense line may be one of the largest in the county and can really wear out a defense over 4 quarters. The Cougars don’t have the ball handlers they did last year, but last week against West Hills running back Alex Perlin went 22 rushes for 188 yards and a few scores showing some serious promise for the rest of the season.
Grossmont has more skill athletes than Steele Canyon this year so look for the Foothillers to break some plays open in the special teams department. Grossmont has the ability to return a punt or kick off return to the house at anytime so the Cougars will have to be sound on special teams in order to secure a home victory. I believe Grossmont has the edge in special teams and that just may be the difference in the game tomorrow night.
Prediction – (Grossmont 26 – Steele Canyon 21)
