The atmosphere in La Mesa this Friday night is going to feel a lot like CIF playoff weather as the unbeaten (5-0) Valhalla Norsemen storm into (3-1-1) Helix High School for the first week of League play. This is the first of five games for both Valhalla and Helix as they will kickoff their respective 5 game sprint to the Grossmont South League Title in a match up Friday night that should be a spectacular one and he winner of this could be your champ.
The Norsemen without a doubt have what it takes to beat every school in their divison to be crowned League Champs of the South. If Valhalla beat every school in their league then they would be a perfect (10-0) come November and Grossmont South League Champs. Now I know that is a hefty statement but keep in mind it's just a statement. It's worthy of the conversation because who honestly picked Valhalla to be (5-0) heading into opening week of League play against Helix?
Well that time is hear and that time is now. The Pete Thomas Express is making another stop this week in the East County with a visit to Helix High School. Out of the 95 high schools in the entire CIF Section, Thomas has the best all around stats of any quarterback and if there were a high school quarterback rating, like in the NFL, he would have the best quarterback rating out of any high school quarterback in the San Diego Section.
Thomas is averaging 249 passing yards a game with 17 total touchdowns and were only half way through the season. Even more impressive is this 11th grader has only thrown 1 interception over 129 pass attempts and 90 completions. Did I already mention the (5-0) record? Can Helix stop the high flying Norsemen this week?
Of course they can ladies and gentlemen. Let's not forget the Helix Highlanders are the most talented bunch of players in East County. They have showed some times of frustration on the field though that has led to turnovers and penalties. In addition to that a loss to Mira Mesa and a tie with Otay "no pun intended" has left the Scotties confidence a little shaken.
Well Coach Starr had a week off and had a chance to regroup with the troops before he enters League war against the pass happy Norseman. They will be prepared for Thomas given the extra week for sure, but will be enough. The advantage goes to the home team this week.
Prediction (Helix 28 – Valhalla 24)
