Last Friday night the Braves of El Cajon traveled to Monte Vista to square off against the Monarchs who beat El Cajon last year 28-21. Although the score was different the outcome was much of the same this year as the Monarchs outlasted the fighting tribe of the Braves 31-17.
When you look at the final score it is hard to believe that at half time the games score was 9-0 in favor of the Monarchs. The Braves arguably lost the game in the first half as they were unable to recover from the two turnovers that resulted in points for the home team. With 30 seconds in remaining in the third quarter the score was 24-3 in favor of the Monarchs, but the credit the Braves for not folding and at least attempting what would have been a story book comeback.
In the second half alone the Braves passed on 32 consecutive plays. Senior Issac Soliz of El Cajon Valley threw for 362 yards on 29 of 46 pass attempts. Another Braves senior Peter Alkass benefited the most from the pass happy Braves as he caught 11 passes for 191 yards. The 11 receptions are good for 2nd all-time in school history. Although the individual stats were great the only number that really matters is the score board and the Braves came up short this week.
Monte Vista may have the best running back combo in San Diego and maybe the best the school has seen since Michael Wiley and Ian Miller of the 94’ & 95’ squad. Jarrod Scott of Monte Vista had 175 yards on only 13 carries while Nick Williams had a 97 yard kickoff return that seemed to deflate the Braves in the second half. Both of the Monarchs backs should receive All-League honors when it is all said and done.
Both teams will look to improve this week as the Braves take on the Mustangs of Otay Ranch and the Monarchs will play host to the West Hills Wolf Pack.
