Beyonce & Yusuf in the House

I'm super tired, and not sure what to blog about.

Conan O'Brien is wrapping up. And I can usually watch the rerun of The Colbert Report before logging onto the computer, and throwing a blog up here.

During a commercial I went thru the channels, and saw a brief part of the video for the Beyonce Knowles song. It is awful. Horrible music and beats, and the stupid lyric: "If you like it/then put a ring on it."

I read a review in the LA Times a few days ago, that said her CD wasn't very good. They talked about the songwriters involved, and mentioned they were white. I wasn't sure why that was relevant.

I sometimes mention the race of a person when I describe a party, but that's so you can visualize the person I'm talking about. To imply that it's less geniune to have a white guy write a dance tune is weird.

Now, when I found out Glen Ballard co-wrote a lot of that Alanis Morsette CD (Jagged Little Pill), that bothered me. It was supposed to be this angry album, written after a bad breakup. Then we find out a guy co-writes it with her, who has done some hits for other people.

And, in closing, on a music note...I saw the funniest ad in the Times. It was for Tavis Smiley's show. It had photos of the next five guests: Magic Johnson, Ted Turner, Toni Morrison, Natalie Cole, and Yusuf.

Who is Yusuf, you ask? Well, this is the great part. Under his photo it says "Singer/writer formerly known as Cat Stevens."

Now that is what he should be known as. The way we had to call Prince that stupid name for a few years.

  1. Well, in the articles you read, were they actually trying to put down a certain track because the writer was white? Because I could see only doing it for visual purposes. Letting people know it's not this chick who's writing squat, it's everyone from Missy Elliot to White Guy McGee. It makes for a good visual, to know it's across the board.
She's had a few lawsuits against her for stealing songs of other unknown artists.
She's whick-whick-whack, but between daddy, the booty, and now hubby Jay-Z we're far from seeing the last of her.
    Boo.

  2. I always wanted to know, if she credited the band Ides of March, for the horn section of their song "Vehicle" which she used in...dang, what's the name of that song? Something with the word "Crazy" or "Crazy in love". Because, when hip hop sample a previous artist, it's usually credited. But this is almost sampled, or just re-arranged to sound like the same horn section.

  3. I disagree, Towelie (tm). I didn't and probably won't read the article, but if they say, "The songs weren't good and a white guy wrote it," that's judging based upon race.

    Mmm...booty.

  4. I'm looking forward to seeing Beyonce in Cadillac Records. The Chess label had so many great acts, although something I read said that they don't cover Bo Diddley or Buddy Guy, which is odd. I guess you can only do so much in bio-pic type stories.
