A Closer Look at the Trailer for The Dictator
After seeing this...
...you may find yourself wondering, "What the hell happened to Sacha Baron Cohen? The guy who eviscerated middle America with Borat was finally going to do a comedy with some edge!" No more poop in a bag at a Midwestern dinner party, no sir. Dude was going after the dangerous sort of crazy exhibited by a genuine megalomaniac - the sort of Middle East dictator who might have tortured Cohen to death for his insolence - if he were still alive.
The opening setup is just fine - Serious Obama...
...followed by Serious Clinton...
...followed by serious Cameron...
...followed by...Adam Sandler, singing in a fake beard?
Oh, right, that's Cohen. But I'm sure you can forgive the confusion - the humor is right up Sandler's "so-easy-it-hurts-except-it's-so-bland-it-doesn't" alley. This is cream of wheat comedy, when what we should be getting is barbed wire and broken glass. What about cutting to a shot of our Dictator pulling out some guy's tooth with a pair of pliers and then ordering his lackey to put it under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy? Maybe followed by a warning that the Tooth Fairy had better not put the wrong flavors of Jelly Bellys in its place, because remember what happened to the last Tooth Fairy? Followed by a shot of a guy in a Tooth Fairy costume, strapped to a bedframe and being gnawed by wild dogs? Followed by a shot of Cohen crying over his Jelly Bellys - "Chili Mango? I hate Chili Mango!" You know, something that gets at the insanity.
Enough. Back to the trailer. Here is a woman smashing bricks with her breast. Because Middle Eastern women have big, strong boobs?
Here is Cohen post-coital with Megan Fox. How this is not accompanied by a joke in which Cohen compares her performance with that of his favorite goat is beyond me. Her expression would make so much sense!
