A good year for women on film, as exemplified in new releases The Eyes of My Mother, Miss Sloane, and more

Annapurna pictures, which distributed the teensploitation hit Spring Breakers earlier this year, has announced plans to produce and distribute Dirty Dancing 2, a sequel to smash '80s hit starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Amazingly, the company bought the concept from a group of Scripps Ranch high school students after they were suspended for using school equipment to produce a twerking video that violated the school's sexual conduct policies. ("Twerking" here refers to a method of dancing that involves serious bootyquake, often while spread-legged, and sometimes while upside down.)
"Honestly," says Annapurna head of teensploitation Harry Palm, "if these kids hadn't gotten suspended, we never would have known about this video - or about twerking. But once the news went viral, we knew what we had to do. These girls are rebel visionaries, and so are the boys who filmed them. They were willing to risk it all for their artistic vision, and while they suffered at the hands of the so-called authorities, they also caught our attention. We're proud to be able to assist them in sharing their gifts with the world."
In a world exclusive, SD on the QT has been able to acquire several concept posters currently being test marketed, posters that use images from the original, groundbreaking video. Enjoy!
