Backyard Chicken Movement Scratches Around Ocean Beach
A rooster is not a chicken. You only need a rooster if you want baby chicks. A chicken on its own will produce about an egg a day, rain or shine. I'd love to have a few chickens on hand, personally, but that 50' distance is absurd in this area, which was obviously the intention when that was written up.— July 13, 2011 4:57 p.m.
End of the Trail
I am so sorry to hear that you are ill. I have absolutely loved your columns over the years, along with Ed Bedford's Tin Fork, both columns have helped me learn about this area and enjoy living here.— July 8, 2011 5:26 p.m.

Rename the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge?
Reagan, that great orange-haired communicator, was a dismal California Governor and a worse US President. The notion of renaming the Coronado Bay Bridge after Reagan is bizarre. The GOP's unending beatification of Reagan is delusional thinking at its finest. From his insane defense deficit spending to raping Greneda in an effort to rehabilitate the abuse of the US military following Viet Nam to deep cuts in health and human services spending, not to mention the utterly discredited "trickle down" economics of that era, Reagan represents the worst the US has to offer. The Presidency was his greatest role. He was a figurehead for what in an unvarnished light might be called fascism, neatly packaged for easy sound-bite consumption. Rename the Coronado Bay Bridge after Reagan? I don't think so.— February 1, 2011 1:43 p.m.

Appeals Court Says Mount Soledad Cross Unconstitutional

Lincoln Acres family cited for illegal house
I just got off the phone with a representative of Supervisor Cox' office, who was cordial, but insistent that since a citation had already been issued that it was looking like a civil matter and that Supervisor Cox' office had tried to steer the Bells towards legal aid. I made the point that this kind of thing make the Supervisor look bad, the country look bad, and ultimately reduces faith in government, who look like a pack of a**holes already. This isn't fair -- the family, through no fault of their own, finds themselves behind the 8-ball, the party least able to cope with the sudden expense of basically rebuilding half their new home. This sucks out loud. I'm too angry to compose anything resembling an intelligent thought.— September 22, 2010 2:42 p.m.
Lincoln Acres family cited for illegal house
How high up the government food chain does this family have to go, up into the strata of thousand-dollar suits and people who don't wash their own cars or mow their own lawns or whatever, to find some government official WHO CAN BE BOTHERED TO GET OFF THEIR BUTT AND HELP THIS FAMILY??? They're not asking for the moon. And this ought to be a NON-ISSUE, they did everything they could and it seems like no bloodsucking government leech can be bothered to DO A LITTLE REAL WORK and help them out -- their entryway is not exactly where some bureaucrat says it ought to be? Will that stop the world from revolving? I mean, seriously -- which government employee has to be shaken awake to DO A LITTLE WORK BENEFITING REAL PEOPLE? Help the Bells out -- get the government bureaucracy off their back. Let them keep their home. Who needs to hear from people? State Senators? The Governor? Who? How high up do we need to aim to get somebody's attention to save what to politicians look like ants, ie, regular people? Lazier that housecats, politicians and government workers. "OH, we can't do ANYthing about it..." Get off your butt and do some good for a change, already.— September 20, 2010 11:06 a.m.
