An End

Dear Duncan, I just learned of Manny's death, and I too was a fresh faced 19 year old walking into Manny's film class in 1971 at the remote UCSD. His way of teaching opened my eyes and turned around my thinking. It was remarkable, and I often think his was the most impactful experience I had in all those years of higher education. He and my sociology professor, Aaron Cicourel, who also challenged what I thought I knew. I also lived a couple of doors down on Ocean Ave and remember the Checkers Cab. Manny was already legendary on that street. We would talk about our Manny sightings spurred by Carrie's interest in all things about movies. I would see him in the late 90's at Barnes and Noble in Encinitas on early Sunday mornings. One day I did have the guts to go up to him and thank him for those classes. I am so glad I did. He was an original not trying to be an original. Thank you for your sharing. sue
