Joe Rush, at left, Commander of The American Legion’s Dennis T. Williams Post 310, located at 465 N. 47th Street, shown here in Ontario, California, at the annual Department of California Convention on Friday, June 26. Rush accepted statewide recognition for “Most Unique Project” of community service from fellow Legionnaire Michael Stadnick, of Santa Maria. The award was bestowed for Commander Rush’s and Post 310 Legionnaires’ seven-year efforts, which led to the June 3 renaming of the Chollas View Street formerly called Lise Avenue to Lakiba Palmer Avenue, honoring the memory and sacrifice of Lakiba Nicole Palmer, a U.S. Navy seaman among those killed in the terrorist bombing of the USS Cole in October 2000. Palmer had lived on Lise Avenue while growing up in the neighborhood.
